Catherine O'Neill

Artistic Director & Session Facilitator

Sessions are led by a Masters qualified facilitator, Catherine O'Neill.

Catherine, with a lifelong passion for Shakespearian works and inspiring actors has, over 40 years worked as a puppeteer, actor, theatre director and teacher.

Upon emigrating to Australia Catherine opened one of the first youth theatres in this region, Sunshine Coast Drama School and opened several first ever youth theatres on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, including two in the hinterland.

She also teaches piano and acoustic drums, works as a youth theatre director, performs as a puppeteer and organizes community workshops in puppetry.

She is the first person to open and manage a biennial community puppet festival in Queensland.

''One dream I've always had though is to have a dedicated adult Shakespeare company. In 2025 I decided to just start one.

With years of experience in helping young actors find their true interest in theatre I felt I wanted this new company to be a little different. So, there are no auditions, no experience required and the minimum age is 16. Anyone can join because I've always believed theatre is for everyone. I look for the chance to take a highly committed actor and show them that acting has no boundaries such as age, culture or monetary income. I'm not necessarily looking for talent, only commitment. I'm able to see the passion in a person the minute they come through the door and I'm always excited to show them that they can develop and have the most amazing hobby or career.

The annual fee is ridiculously affordable and I run highly energetic sessions in Viewpoint, Composition, Mask and Puppet theatre. My basic to advanced actor training uses Shakespearian and Commedia Dell Arte as a foil to challenge and enhance skills.

I knew what I wanted in forming this Shakespeare company and I am very lucky to now have the most amazing ensemble.

''I simply could not believe the genuine welcome I received in my first session, I was SO nervous but within 5 minutes I felt like I had found where I belong. The training is just wonderful, I absolutely love it.'' Student, Sarah, 54.

To be an actor you need to train......otherwise you are a person who just believes they know how to act.....

To be an actor you need to train......otherwise you are a person who just believes they know how to act.....

Been involved in amateur theatre for years, getting lead roles, maybe also directing?

If you have never received training how do you know what is missing in your acting or direction by untrained directors and praised after every show by family and friends who are there to support only you.

Yes, I am being blunt. But honest.

This adage is true - You don't know what you don't know.

After one session with this company you may find that what you were doing was really good, but now you can pave the way to becoming great.

Don't you want to be better??

I can train you to find roles within you that you never knew you had access to.

I can push you to your maximum to where you thought you could never be able to go.

I can show you a whole world of theatre pain that for the committed actor doesn't even hurt.

You just need to show up

and stop believing you are amazing onstage without any training.

Hear it from the students.....

"I have never, in my entire life, enjoyed Monday nights so much as this. I look forward to your lesson every week. I did some acting at college but it was absolutely nothing like this. I have learned more in two months than I did in two years" Student, Claire 60

"I actually had a really bad migraine and wasn't going to come tonight but I knew I would feel better if I did. And I do!" Student, Catherine 50

"I can't believe you are offering this fantastic training, I don't know why the whole acting community on the Coast isn't there! " Parent of 17 year old student.

"It's amazing to just come to session after whatever type of day you've had and just forget all about the outside world, I am glad you started this company as there is nothing else like it on the Coast." Current student, aged 18.

Other random comments by students : D

You really are the most amazing bloody teacher, I've learned so much in such short space of time.

I wish we didn't have to stop for end of term.

I wish classes were on twice a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have never acted before, can I join?

Yes. No audition. Commitment only is required. I will train you to become an actor.

Can I just watch? I'm too anxious.

It depends. I will ask you further questions so I understand where you are at with wanting to act. Usually everyone joins in, no observers. But not everyone is able to do that initially. Let's talk!

Why do we have to wear all black?

Your attire is as important as what is inside. Plain blacks help to clear away your daily life issues, domestic and working roles and assist you to enter the space as a body wanting to train. Wearing this attire is like a canvas by which you can be who you want to be in the acting space. Leave troubles outside and be an actor for 1.5 hours every week.

Why don't you charge more for the yearly membership?

Because there is no classical acting training in this region and yet we have many theatre companies on the Coast undertaking productions. In this demographic wages are low and many are unemployed. I'm not into training only those who can afford exorbitant fees. Acting shouldn't discriminate.

Do you do productions?

Yes, but you do have to train with us otherwise we are like all other companies on offer. Training is key.

What do we do in session?

We work on Viewpoints, a toolkit for actors, and rehearse. We also have other challenges too. Most recently every member had to sing to the rest of the ensemble with a rehearsed song to a backing track. This term they are devising a stand up comedy routine. By doing these challenges I can find hidden talents - that even you might not know you have. Describing everything we do in session would take too long here, come for a trial session : )

I just want to be an actor. I don't need training, done it for ages and won amateur acting awards.

Here's the harsh truth;

You need to train. Or you will always be an amateur doing acting for a hobby. Many of us can act but can you hold an audience in the palm of your hand and have absolute total control over them.

Do you know how to analyse a play, your character, and physically and mentally and totally become that character.

Are you familiar and practiced in backstage/onstage theatre etiquette.

Can you control your nerves backstage or think in two minds onstage, yours and that of the character, when something goes wrong.

Can you have an audience still thinking about your performance in 5 years time.

Can you become someone else, so totally and completely that you take several weeks to climb back into your own life.

If you answered yes to all of these questions and you have had no training at all I dare you to come to a trial....

Start your acting career. Contact me. Take a trial. Join. Start training. Rehearse. Perform. Never look back.
